Description
Cardinal Reginald Pole
Letter signed, to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle
in Italian, reiterating his request for Granvelle to intervene with the Emperor over Pole's pension, and recommending himself to Granvelle's good offices, 1 page, folio, Viterbo, 18 October 1544, integral address leaf, seal and paper tie, dispatch slits, some soiling to lower outer corner
Written during his time as papal legate in Viterbo, to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, who became one of Charles V's most trusted advisors. This was a repeated request to Granvelle, asking him to intercede with the Archbishop of Granada, Mendoza y Bobadilla, about the disputed pension, as an earlier supplication for it to be paid had been unsuccessful (see The Correspondence of Reginald Pole, vol.1, p.323, where this letter is mentioned though without many details). Pole and Granvelle had met earlier in Trent at the start of the Council, but they did not get along and Granvelle later opposed Pole's appointment to a position for the Emperor.
