Ricky Powell was one of the best known photographers in the history of Hip Hop. Self-trained, his professional career started in earnest in 1986 when he accompanied the Beastie Boys on Run DMC's now-famous Raising Hell Tour. Over the course of his life he documented the changing landscape of popular culture, photographing the growing Hip Hop, punk, pop art, and graffiti movements. He shot candid portraits of dozens of artists, including Madonna, Basquiat, and Warhol, with his work appearing in many of the world's most esteemed publications, including TIME, Rolling Stone, The Source, the New York Post, The New York Times, Vibe, The Village Voice, and Newsweek.
