rectangular, the lid centred with the chased cipher of Louis Philippe, King of the French, on a sablé ground, within rich leafy scrolling foliage, the sides and base similarly decorated around engine-turning, the interior of the lid engraved with a presentation inscription reading: 'Donné par le Roi / à Mr. Horace Vernet / Versailles 10 Juin 1837', maker's mark, bear's head unofficial 3e titre, Paris titre et garantie for 1809-1819 and 1819-1838, post-1919 French control mark, the bezel engraved by the retailer: Mal. Bernard Joaillier du Roi, numbered: No. 145
