Description
Property from an important European private collection
A chased two-colour gold snuff box, Jean-François Marcillac, Paris, 1809-1819
rectangular with rounded corners, all sides engine-turned in a concentric pattern within plain polished rims and opulently-chased borders of parrot tulips alternating with stylised leaves and flowers on a sablé ground, maker's mark,Paris grosse garantie and gross recense 1809-1819, later French control marks
8.9cm., 3½in. wide
Joseph-François Marcillac fils entered a first mark on 4 August 1809 for la bijouterie: le gros bijou: tabatières d’or, étuis, ciseaux, nécessaires en or et en platine from 10 rue des Bons-Enfants; a second from 4 rue des Fontaines in 1813; and a third the following year from 16 rue de la Bibliothèque where he is recorded until 1825. It is most unusual that he registered a mark at that date for platinum.
Another engine-turned gold box by this maker is in the collections of the Louvre (Grandjean, Les tabatières du musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, p. 231, no. 329).
