The following design is where Gérald Genta combines haute horology with haute joaillerie searching for elegance, refinement and beauty. Genta created the following watch in 1994, in consultation with the Sultan of Brunei. The watch features a Westminster chime repeating mechanism, power reserve, jour hours and retrograde minutes. The dial and case are inspired by the splendour and magnificence of precious stones with the sole purpose of bedazzling its owner. The watch included an incredible 1,000 pieces and Gérald Genta was worried that the watch would look too thick due to the number of pieces in the movement. He created a truly unique case with steps like a pyramid which is totally unique. The present design is rarest still because it also includes the side profile of the case.

Retrograde minutes is a hand with a tip moving over a portion of the arc of a circle instead of an entire circle. When it reaches the end of its path, it instantly returns to its point of departure. Retrograde hands may give various indications such as the hours and the minutes and they are tremendously difficult to achieve in watchmaking.
