This never seen before watercolour was kept in the archive and resurfaces for the first time to be admired by the public. The present lot nicely represents the first draft of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak prototype by Gérald Genta. It already shows the typical screws on the bezel, though there were only six and not eight like we eventually saw on the watch. This was matched by the hexagonal bezel as opposed to the later octagonal one. However, the rest of the case and bracelet remained similar and only saw few modifications from the first draft. It becomes apparent that Gérald Genta already had a clear vision of his creation from the very beginning.

When it comes to new inventions and iconic designs, often the most sought-after items are prototypes or original designs thereof. With this lot Sotheby's is able to offer not only an early design, but indeed the first draft of what was to become the prototype of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. It may hence be considered the very first physical visual of what is considered an icon today and therefore provides an extremely rare opportunity for any collector to own a piece of horological history.
