Gérald Genta

Unlike most designs by Gérald Genta, this one was created on a pale background, making it very unusual. The piece was conceived to be highly precious, with rubies forming the shirt of Mickey. Central figure in the Genta’s universe, Mickey forms the entire watch. Most of the time he is decorating the dial and used to serve the function of indicating the time, for example with his arm moving to points at the minutes. This time, Genta went further and placed Mickey as not only the central theme, but the only element of his design. In this representation, Mickey is not in action, his arms are behind his back. He is starring at us with a smile. The function of the watch, telling the time through the hands and a dial, has disappeared, enclosed in the character. 

With this design, Gérald Genta used the watch as a starting point to create a piece of art. This is this very quest that animated his spirit throughout his career and reconfirms his motto that he was a designer and not a watch manufacture.
