Description

A pair of Louis XV style gilt-bronze three-light wall appliques, late 19th century, in the manner of Jacques Caffiéri

marked with the crowned c poinçon, drilled for electricity

57cm. high, 43cm. wide; 1ft. 10½in., 1ft. 5in.

The present pair of wall-lights, with their confident curved lines and organic form, evoke the mature rococo style of the mid-18th century. The virtuoso design and fluidity of movement combined with refined chasing all relate to the oeuvre of Jacques Caffiéri. A similar example was sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 29 September 2008, lot 27 (16,250 EUR). Others are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, pp.140-142.
