Rolex
'Lemon Paul Newman' Daytona, Ref. 6264
A yellow gold chronograph wristwatch
Circa 1970
Dial: Exotic tri-colour “Lemon”
Calibre: cal. Valjoux 727 manual winding, 17 jewels
Case: 18k yellow gold, screw-down back
Case number: 2'357'483
Closure: brown calfskin Sotheby's branded strap and 18k yellow gold Rolex pin buckle
Dimensions: 37mm
Signed: case, dial and movement
Box: no
Papers: no
Accessories: Rolex pouch and small cardboard Rolex box
Movement: Valjoux Caliber 727, winding and running with chronograph operating.
Dial: excellent condition with little if any signs of wear. All lume plots present, glow under UV light but quickly fades. Some very light scratching to hands and light oxidization. Lume on hands matches creamy colour of plots. Minor spotting to 9 o’clock subsidiary dial at first index below 15.
Case: Minor and superficial scratches to case throughout. Retains full factory proportions with little if any signs of polishing. Dark oxidization present next to pushers and crowns, suggesting lack of use and likely kept in a safe for a long period of time. Lugs retain strong and even brushed satin finish and high polish on adjacent facet. Underside of lugs show some light scratching, likely from removal of springbars. Hallmarks retain strong and deep edges, the same goes for case numbers and reference numbers between the lugs. Small dent to the reverse of case and on the case band next to winding crown.
Bezel: Likely replaced in a service (watchmaker inscription to inside caseback). Appears to be a MK.III insert in black acrylic.
Crystal: some minor scratching so surface
Caseback: signed Rolex, Geneva hallmarks for 18K yellow gold with a hammerhead Poinçon de Maître no.136 (C.R. Spillman & Co. SA). Watchmaker inscription to inside caseback. Some light scratching and wear to caseback, some wear to teeth on screw down back. Oyster screw down back stamped 6264 on interior.
