The Patek Philippe Nautilus was originally launched in 1976 with the Reference 3700/1A. It was an unexpected design for the firm who had up until then created tradition-guided designs dressed only in precious metals. Debuting a stainless-steel sport watch brought the apex atelier into the future. Understanding the iconic design and its longevity with the company early on, Patek Philippe developed the Nautilus into a full fledged collection, through the Reference 4700, a 27mm ladies model, and the present lot, the Reference 3800, launched in 1981.

The Reference 3800 sported all the same celebrated styling cues, albeit in a 4.5 mm smaller case, coming in at a comparably conservative 37.5 mm across. It is further enhanced by Patek Philippe’s decision to outfit the model with an in-house center seconds movement as opposed to the previously used Jaeger-LeCoultre ebauche.
