A gilt metal oval basket form stackfreed watch, Circa 1580 with alterations
Dial: associated gilt metal centered by a chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, inner ring with Arabic numerals calibrated for 13-24, single blued steel hand, the reserves engraved with foliate scrolls
Caliber: associated gilded oval movement, replaced balance wheel, with blued steel stackfeed, gilded flat pillars, balance cock of scroll form, bristle regulator, the movement plate engraved with initials ‘BHT’
Case: oval case pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage and serpent heads, hinged cover centered by an openwork star, surrounded by eight crescents filled with foliage and flowers, the sides fitted with pendant ring handles case, raised on bun form feet, the base further engraved with a medallion of flowers

Signed: movement plate engraved with the initials ‘BHT’

The stackfreed, which was introduced in Germany, is used to equalise the force of the mainspring and consists of a cam geared to the arbor of the mainspring. Pressing against the cam is a roller mounted on a strong spring.
The stackfreed was phased out in 1650.
