The Reference 1630 is a most interesting piece and a landmark in the development of the Rolex production.
Indeed, while it looks like the well-known Oysterquartz, this model was its predecessor.
The most obvious differences are that it is fitted with an automatic movement and the dial is signed Datejust.
This piece further has the correct sunken outer edge of the dial graduated to minutes and half minute, while later replacement examples were graduated to the minutes only.
Its reference and serial numbers are engraved under the lugs.
These pieces have a serial number between 5.1 and 5.4 million, suggesting an extremely short production period of less than a year.
The present watch is fitted with its original bracelet 96673, a rarity in itself.
Made for this reference 1630, it has its three center links in gold, as opposed to the two center links for the later Oysterquartz production.
It further has a “B” and a “14” engraved on the clasp, confirming the right production period and the fact that the gold is 14k.
Over the years, many of these bracelets have been replaced by more generic Oysterquartz ones, further enhancing the rarity and interest of this lot.
There is no exaggeration in stating that this present 1630, with original matching parts, is a true rarity and delight for the connoisseur.
