A gold single cased verge watch with later enamel painted garden scene

Circa 1775


Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, square baluster pillars, signed and numbered Romilly, Paris, 6204

Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute ring, filigree hands, the minute hand kinked to accommodate winding square

• Case: gold single case, the back with later soft enamel painted scene of a gentleman serenading a lady in a garden with musicians, the figures painted en grisaille against a rose coloured background, within an asymmetric cartouche surrounded by applied vari-colour gold flowers, foliage and a basket of produce, front bezel with applied vari-colour garlands, inside case back with incuse maker's mark G & L
