No. 16526

A simple automaton verge watch bearing the signature G. Masterman, London, lacking outer case

circa 1810

Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, decorative unpierced garnet faux endstone, numbered 860 beneath the mount, fusee and chain, turned pillars, bearing the signature G. Masterman, London, no. 16526

• Dial: white enamel, small subsidiary time dial, Arabic numerals, outer minute ring, surrounded by polychrome enamel scene of the Battle at Arcole a bridge in the foreground with aperture revealing a rotating disc painted with advancing troops, inscribed to the top 'bataille bei arcola geironnen von Bonaparte d. 16tem nov.br 1795' [sic]

Case: plain inner case, lacking outer case, inside back gilded, numbered 23670

diameter 53mm

The dial commemorates the battle between French and Austiran forces at Arcole during the French Revolutionary Wars. The year given on the dial appears to be an error as the battle took place from 15-17 November 1796 rather than 1795 as shown on the dial.
