No. 1677

An 18ct gold hunting cased keyless 52 1/2 minute karrusel watch of Essex County Cricketing interest

1897-98

Movement: gilded 3/4 plate, lever escapement mounted on a 52 1/2 minute karrusel carriage, bi-metallic compensation balance, ruby endstone, engraved By Warrants to H.M. the late Queen Victoria, signed J. W. Benson, 25 Old Bond Street, London, no. 1677

Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, outer minute ring, subsidiary seconds, very faded/ghosted signature J. W. Benson, London

Case: 18ct gold, polished covers, the front with engraved monogram HGO, gold bow and pendant, gold cuvette with presentation engraving: Presented to H. G. Owen by the Essex County Cricket Club in recognition of his long and valuable services as Captain of the XI, April 23rd 1903, case back hallmarked 1897-98 and with sponsor's mark P.W. in oval cameo for Philip Woodman & Sons, pendant with maker's mark C.H

Diameter 50.5mm. Weight: approx. 116.6 g

It would appear that the gold case was old stock when the movement was cased. The case is hallmarked for 1897-1898 yet the movement is engraved "By Warrants to Her Majesty the late Queen Victoria". Queen Victoria died in 1901. The cuvette's inscription is dated 1903 which would indeed seem to suggest that the watch was not completed until that latter year.
