(Spilla in rubini e diamanti)
1950
Designed as a mermaid, enhanced with cabochon rubies and single-cut diamonds, French assay and maker's mark, accompanied by leather case stamped Eliakim LeCaire.
This brooch was a gift from H.M. King Farouk of Egypt to the present owner.
(Questa spilla fù donata all'attuale proprietaria da S.M. Il Re Farouk d'Egitto.)
King Farouk was the tenth ruler of Egypt from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty and the penultimate King of Egypt, Sudan, succeeding his father, Fuad I, in 1936. The youthful king, educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, England, often travelled to Europe for grand shopping. Known for his extravagance and lavish lifestyle Farouk left behind an extensive and important collection of works of art; spanning a wide range of categories, from Fabergé and Objects of Vertu to Watches and Jewelry. Famous his red 1947 Bentley Mark VI, with coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi; and the extraordinary jewels as the pear-shaped 94-carat Star of the East Diamond and a fancy color oval-cut diamond bought by Harry Winston. During the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 He was forced to abdicate, in favor of his infant son Ahmed Fuad and fled Egypt three days later, living in exile, until his death in Rome in 1965. In March 10th-17th, 1954, Sotheby & Co., had the privilege to present King Farouk’s collections in the historical sale “The Palace Collections of Egypt”, Koubbeh Palace, Cairo, at the time, considered the auction of the century.
