Description
Of annular design, with a squawking bird to the centre and the words 'GIMCRACK' applied to the lower edge, decorated with black enamel and highlighted by single-cut diamonds, signed Cartier.
Gimcrack is possibly a reference to the Gimcrack Stakes, one of the highest level of Thoroughbred horse racing events, and was first run in 1846. The event itself takes its name from a very successful 18th century racehorse which won twenty-seven out of the thirty-six races he ran. It is possible that the brooch was commissioned by the Earl of Derby with a group of commemorative jewels from Cartier. This particular brooch was maybe gifted to The Right Honourable Alice Stanley, Countess of Derby, as their horse had been the winner of the 1923 Gimcrack.
