The Property of a European Gentleman
A pair of magnificent lacquered Arita trumpet vases
Edo period, late 17th century
each of typical form with wide everted neck and ring foot, decorated in underglaze blue with peonies and scrolling foliage, and lacquered in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, coloured pigments, each with two lobed cartouches depicting ho-o birds and chaffinch among peony and plum blossom on a hexagonal ground, the panels framed in black lacquer, divided by tied poem paper slips decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a red lacquer ground with geometric designs, bamboo and foliate scrolls, the interior of the necks with further peonies and scrolling foliage
Both approx. 58.5 cm., 23 in.
A pair of vases almost identical to this one is in the historical collection of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Porzellansammlung, inventory numbers P.O. 5679 and P.O. 5680)
