Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861)
The Capture of Kidomaru by Minamoto no Raiko
Edo period, 19th century
woodblock print, triptych, each sheet signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga, and with artist's paulownia seal, censor's seals Mera (Mera Ta'ichiro) and Watanabe (Watanabe Shoemon), published by Yamaguchiya Tobei (Kinkodo) in 1851
Vertical oban triptych:
Left sheet: 36.5 x 25.2 cm., 14⅜ x 10 in.
Centre sheet: 36.3 x 25.2 cm., 14⅜ x 10 in.
Right sheet: 36.2 x 24.6 cm., 14¼ x 9¾ in.
The bandit Kidomaru is depicted with dark blue skin rushing forward to attack Minamoto no Yorimitsu on a desolate country road and is restrained by the latter's retainers.
