Description

The Property of a Lady

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)

Surugadai in Edo (Toto Surugadai)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Hokusai aratame Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, changed from Hokusai), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), blue outline, circa 1831-32

Horizontal oban: 25.6 x 37.2 cm., 10⅛ x 15¾ in.

This lot has been professionally mounted for exhibition, there is residue tape to the reverse.

The quiet road in the Surugadai district of Edo is here populated with various travellers and labourers each carrying their load. A large pine tree hangs over the descending slope of the hill with rooftops just visible above the verdant foliage; to the right of the scene are two dwellings and the distant cone of Mount Fuji, which towers over rows of further rooftops.
