woodblock print, surimono, signed Gakyojin Hokusai ga (Pictured by Hokusai, man crazy to paint), privately issued, circa 1805 


Surimono, ebankiri: 19.5 x 53.4 cm., 7¾ x 21 in. 

The print depicts a scene from the play Mounting Love at the Snowbound Barrier (Tsumoru koi yuki no seki no to). Ono no Komachi (left) pays a visit to her fiancé, Yoshimine Munesada (right), who is at home playing the koto. Sekibei (centre), with his large axe placed on bales of straw, stands beneath the bowing branches of a cherry tree in spring bloom.
