Gerda Tirén née Rydberg studied at the Technical School in Stockholm and at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. She travelled to Paris on a scholarship and spent time at the artists' colony in Grez-sur-Loing, where the present work was painted. Many Scandinavian artists sought refuge and inspiration at Grez, situated approximately 70km southeast of Paris. The village was a rural idyll and grey stonehouses were surrounded by moss-clad walls and gardens which sloped down to the river Loing.
