A George II Silver Soup Tureen and a Cover, John Jacobs, London, 1749

of bombé oval form raised on four lion-mask and paw feet, and applied on both sides with rococo cartouches engraved with contemporary arms, the shell and scroll handles rising from masks whose beards spread to form a cartouche, shaped hoop handle mounted on rayed discs and capped by a shell, marked on base, the cover of later date with imitation marks

The arms are those of Calverley quartering Blackett and with Blackett in pretense, for William Calverley of Calverley, who became 2nd Baronet on the death of his father in 1749, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir William Blackett, Bart of Newcastle. Sir William assumed the surname and arms of Blackett.

The Calverley Toilet Set of 1683 at the Victoria and Albert Museum is thought to have been acquired second-hand by the family in the early 18th century (Charles Oman, Caroline Silver, p. 18 and p. 63, pls. 88-91).
