"Sculpture Front" Sideboard

1976

gilt and painted steel, brass, slate, painted wood

signed Paul Evans, dated 76 and with Dorsey Reading's fabrication mark

21 x 89½ x 18½ in. (53.3 x 227.3 x 47 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The sculpted elements are all in well-preserved condition and present with superb polychrome and gilt decorations. The metal elements overall present with surface irregularities and great texture which are inherent to the artist's practice. The metal elements present with light oxidation throughout, which is consistent with age and common for such works, as well as scattered surface scratches and occasional small losses to the enamel particularly concentrated to the edges. The textural metal surface and heavily sculpted door fronts present with light soiling concentrated to the recessed contours of the design. The sideboard opens to two separate compartments, one fitted with a removable shelf and the other fitted with a removable drawer. The painted wooden interiors of the compartments present with occasional surface scratches, wear and light soiling consistent with age and gentle use. The original slate top is in excellent condition overall and presents with a few minute indentations to the edges, scattered minor surface scratches, faint abrasions and light soiling consistent with gentle use. The back edge of the slate presents with traces of orange and white paint residue, not visually distracting. A masterful example from the artist’s celebrated “Sculpture-Front” series.
