Lorna Simpson’s Summer '57/Summer '09 (Group 7) grew out of an album of black and white photographs Simpson bought on eBay. The photographs, taken by an unknown photographer in 1957, show an attractive, young black woman (and an occasional male figure), adopting poses that mimic the alluring pin-up style of the 1940s and 50s. Simpson restaged the images using herself as a model, copying the woman’s clothing, poses, and environment in order to create a narrative between the unidentified woman and Simpson. The project resulted in 307 individually framed silver gelatin prints, intended to be combined in varying numbers and dimensions.
