Wolf Kahn worked en plein air, positioning himself within the landscape in order to paint his surroundings from various perspectives at different times of day. His loose brushwork and vibrant colors suggest the dynamic interplay of light, shadow, sky, land and water; however, Kahn's Railroad Along the River also borrows from the work of Color Field painters like Marth Rothko and Abstract Expressionist painters like his teacher and fellow German expatriate Hans Hoffman.
