Executed in 2013.
Nzigire, a windowed 28 year old, mother of 5 children is a cross border chicken trader between the DR Congo and Rwanda. Every 30 minutes she rotates the chickens in her sack so that they don't suffocate. On average she sells 10 chickens a day with a profit of about 5 dollars. The photograph was taken at the Rusizi Border, Bukavu, DR Congo on 25 May 2013, and it is from an essay entitled 'CROSSING, the Journey to Peace', offering a compelling glimpse into the lives of cross-border traders in eastern Democratic Republic.
