The Vanguard Spirit: Modern and Surrealist Masterworks From an Important Estate

Fernando Botero

b. 1932

Familia Protestante

signed Botero and dated 69 (lower right); signed Botero, titled and dated 1969 (on the reverse)

oil on canvas

82¾ by 69 in.

210 by 175 cm.

Executed in 1969.

This large painting is well stretched onto a sturdy stretcher. The tacking edges have been reinforced. The work is clean, lightly varnished, and retouched. Restorations have been applied to some isolated paint losses on the right edge, particularly in the center. The surface is slightly uneven in this area, but there is no visible instability. There are a few other isolated restorations within the painting itself, none of them more than 1 inch in length. The restorations are certainly not numerous, and can mostly only been seen under ultraviolet light. They are not unusual for a work of this scale. The work should be hung as is.
