Jim Shaw founded O-ism, an artistic American religion based on Mormonism. His works oscillate between painting, sculpture, and drawing. His oeuvre evokes the detritus of American culture in a Surrealist tone. Shaw told Interview Magazine in 2015, "I realized that I wasn't naturally born to good taste. I understand what it is, but I am happy to wear bright colors. I do have a few items of black clothing, but I think good taste and doing the same thing over and over again is what the whole art world has become."

Jim Shaw a fondé O-ism, une religion artistique américaine basée sur le mormonisme. Ses œuvres oscillent entre peinture, sculpture et dessin. Son œuvre évoque les détritus de la culture américaine sur un ton surréaliste. Shaw a déclaré à Interview Magazine en 2015 : « J'ai réalisé que je n'étais pas né naturellement pour le bon goût. Je comprends ce que c'est, mais je suis heureux de porter des couleurs vives. J'ai quelques vêtements noirs, mais je pense que le bon goût et faire la même chose encore et encore, c'est ce qu'est devenu tout le monde de l'art. »
