Before he became a sculptor of the excessiveness of objects, Oldenburg had a large production of works on paper and paper sculptures. Billy Klüver, to whom this watercolour is dedicated, was an engineer at AET (Experimentations in Art & Technology), and collaborated with Merce Cunningham, Yvonne Rainer, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Jean Tinguely, whose gigantic sculpture "Homage to New York" was self-destructed during a performance in the gardens of MoMA in 1960, fifty years before Banksy's performance at Sotheby's.
