Before he became a sculptor of the excessiveness of objects, Oldenburg had a large production of works on paper and paper sculptures. Billy Klüver, to whom this watercolour is dedicated, was an engineer at AET (Experimentations in Art & Technology), and collaborated with Merce Cunningham, Yvonne Rainer, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Jean Tinguely, whose gigantic sculpture "Homage to New York" was self-destructed during a performance in the gardens of MoMA in 1960, fifty years before Banksy's performance at Sotheby's.

Avant d’être le sculpteur de la démesure des objets, Oldenburg eut une grande production d’œuvres sur papier et de sculptures en papier. Billy Klüver, à qui cette aquarelle est dédicacée, était ingénieur à l’AET (Experimentations in Art & Technology), il collabora avec Merce Cunningham, Yvonne Rainer, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns et Jean Tinguely dont il mit au point la fameuse gigantesque sculpture « Hommage à New York », qui s’est autodétruite lors d’une performance réalisée dans les jardins du MoMA en 1960, soit cinquante ans avant la performance de Banksy chez Sotheby’s.
