Seminal work of Land Art & Earthworks, “Spiral Jetty” is an outdoor sculpture but also a conceptual art apparatus gathering drawings, photographs, notes, texts and a film, Spiral Jetty shot in 16 mm which soundtrack is pivotal. Virginia Dwan, Smithson’s dealer, was the sole patron of Spiral Jetty.

The present work is the unique vintage enlargement of the time made from a photograph taken by Gianfranco Gorgoni from different sequences and has been used as a flag by Smithson for his film & for his exhibition.

Smithson enlarged it in order to give the feeling of vastness and monumentality for his exhibition at Dwan Gallery along with “Spiral Jetty, the Film” in November 1970 as a substitute to the experience of visiting the actual earthwork at Rozen Point, Great Salt Lake.

Smithson might have been impressed by Michael Heizer’s monumental photographic poster/announcement made for his exhibition “Double Negative” at Dwan Gallery in January-february 1970 and the smaller but still large print of Walter De Maria of “Two Parallel Lines”, 1968 exhibited at Dwan Gallery for the “Earthwork” exhibition in October 1968. In any case enlarging photographs of earthworks was for the artists of the time a way for rendering space and physicality in the West.

This unique large print is the one that appears in Smithson’s film “Spiral Jetty”, pinned on the wall of the editing room of his studio in which the camera slowly zooms in while the artist reads his monologue on the making of the sculpture and the film itself and ends the sequence on the print.

Œuvre fondatrice du Land Art, « Spiral Jetty » est une sculpture de plein air mais aussi un dispositif d'art conceptuel regroupant des dessins, des photographies, des notes, des textes et un film, Spiral Jetty tourné en 16 mm dont la bande sonore est centrale. Virginia Dwan, la marchande de Smithson, a été l'unique mécène de Spiral Jetty.

L'œuvre présente est l'unique agrandissement vintage de l'époque réalisé d'une photographie prise par Gianfranco Gorgoni à partir de différentes séquences et a été utilisée comme drapeau par Smithson pour son film et son exposition.

Smithson l'a agrandi afin de donner une impression d'immensité et de monumentalité pour son exposition à la Dwan Gallery avec « Spiral Jetty, the Film » en novembre 1970, en remplacement de l'expérience vécue lors de la visite du terrassement réel à Rozen Point, dans le Grand Lac Salé.

Smithson a peut-être été impressionné par l'affiche photographique monumentale de Michael Heizer réalisée pour son exposition « Double Negative » à la Dwan Gallery en janvier-février 1970 et par le tirage plus petit de Walter De Maria de « Two Parallel Lines », 1968 exposé à la Dwan Gallery pour l'exposition « Earthwork » en octobre 1968. En tout cas, l'agrandissement de photographies de terrassement était pour les artistes de l'époque un moyen de rendre l'espace et la physicalité en Occident.

Ce grand tirage unique est celui qui apparaît dans le film de Smithson « Spiral Jetty », épinglé sur le mur de la salle de montage de son studio, dans lequel la caméra zoome lentement pendant que l'artiste lit son monologue sur la réalisation de la sculpture et du film lui-même et termine la séquence sur le tirage.
