The "Mathematical Objects" are photographs taken by Man Ray during his visits with Max Ernst between 1934 and 1936 at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris. They were scientific sculptures whose abstraction fascinated the Surrealists, and were reinterpreted by Man Ray in 1948 during his California refuge in Los Angeles in a famous series of paintings that he entitled "The Shakespearean Equations".
