André Kertész’s groundbreaking approach to photography was evident within a very short time after acquiring his first camera in 1912 as an 18 year old in Budapest, Hungary. Kertész’s innate sensitivity to rhythm, texture, and the play of light and shadow within his compositions was immediately evident.

This intimate, rainy street scene is emblematic of Kertész’s early works. While steeped in old-world romanticism, it bears distinct evidence of the photographer’s ability to create a balanced composition and compelling narrative.

Early contact prints from before 1925 are exceptionally rare and have only appeared at auction a handful of times.
