The earliest known locking mechanism is first attributed to the Han dynasty. The current examples are more advanced and intricate than their predecessors. 北京故宮博物院藏一類例，載於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集：青銅生活器》，香港，2006年，圖版184。該書編者指出中國現存最早的鎖具可追溯至漢代。
