Kitaoji Rosanjin was one of the most legendary Japanese artists of the Showa period, known as a potter, a painter, an engraver, a seal cutter, a calligrapher, a lacquer artist, a chef, and an epicure. Rosanjin strove to explore the relationship between ceramics and food, and further developed his unique aesthetic theories on ceramics design. In 1927 with the help of another notable Japanese potter, Arakawa Toyozo, Rosanjin established his personal kiln in Yamasaki, Kamakura and officially started his career as a professional potter. Rosanjin was designated a Living National Treasure in 1959 as an Oribe ware artist, but had firmly declined the honour.
