THE EVA (EXTRA VEHICULAR ACTIVITY, OR, MOONWALK) CUE CARDS USED BY NEIL ARMSTRONG AND BUZZ ALDRIN TO PERFORM HUMANKINDS FIRST EVER MOONWALK — WITH INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOTH PRE- AND -POST EVA

BUZZ ALDRIN'S provenance letter reads, in full: "On July 16th, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins, and I lifted off from Pad 39A at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on our journey to perform humankind's first landing on the Moon at the Sea of Tranquility.

This card set is listed in the Lunar Module (LM) Lunar Surface Checklist with instructions to retrieve it from its location inside the LM cabin and place on the Alignment Optical Telescope (AOT). This three-piece card set was printed on both sides, taped together, and folded for storage. The card provided a step-by-step list of every task Neil and I would perform both before and after our lunar surface Extravehicular Activity (EVA), or “moonwalk.”

The card contains a detailed checklist of crew procedures to support a moonwalk for Apollo 11. Side 1’s three cards are for the pre-EVA and part of the post-EVA. Side 2’s sections are all post-EVA including removal of suits, storage of rocks, and jettisoning of any excess equipment.

The card gave us instructions on the sequence of putting on the A7L EVA suit, connecting the hoses from the PLSS (Personal Life Support System) and the OPS (Oxygen Purge System) to the suit, putting on helmet and gloves, and doing a pressure check. Then there are instructions on how to depress the cabin so we could open the hatch and exit the spacecraft.

The data card also provided details on how to reenter the LM, shutdown the PLSS and OPS, plug the suits into the cabin O2, jettison excess equipment such as the PLSS, repress the cabin, and prepare for liftoff from the surface of the Moon.

This three-piece LM Lunar Surface EVA cue card is one of the few objects carried into lunar orbit and is also a rare example of an astronaut flight-certified object used during our mission to land on the Moon."
