reproducing a photographic head and shoulders portrait of Tolstoy in old age, wearing a traditional Russian smock, signature at head of image, and addressed on verso in Tolstoy's hand to Bruno Zuculin in Rome, within a small mount, postmarked Moscow, 28 September 1904

Bruno Zuculin was an Italian diplomat who was later posted to the US and South America.
