Description

Bindings

A group of three eighteenth-century red morocco gilt bindings, two Scottish wheel bindings and one papal binding, comprising:

Robert Dundas. Disputatio juridica... de rerum permutatione. Edinburgh: T. & W. Ruddiman, 1754, 4to, [4], 8pp., Scottish red morocco gilt wheel binding

Robert Dundas. Disputatio juridica... de separationibus. Edinburgh: Balfour and Smellie, 1779, 4to, 14, 2]pp., Scottish red morocco gilt wheel binding, armorial bookplate of Viscount Melville

[Clement XIII] An empty eighteenth-century Roman red morocco gilt binding with the arms of Clement XIII (pope, 1758-1769), small folio, bookplate of Thomas Dick-Lauder

together 3 volumes, extremities slightly rubbed

Two fine examples of Edinburgh thesis bindings; despite the difference in imprint dates, both bindings have a central wheel design, leafy stems in the corners, an outer roll-tooled border and numerous other small stamps including a five-pointed star. A very similar binding is recorded on a copy of Simson's edition of Apollonius of Perga (Glasgow, 1749), in the British Library (c.48.g.11).
