Description

Dulac, Edmund

"The Palace that to Heav'n his pillars threw," original drawing from the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, circa 1909

Watercolor, pencil, and ink on paper (9 x 12 3/4 in., sight), signed "Edmund Dulac" (lower right); sheet lightly toned, two corners chipped just touching image, some minor glue residue at extreme edges. Matted, framed and glazed with Plexiglas.

Reproduced as one (of twenty) colored plates within Dulac's 1909 illustrated edition of Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam. The drawing illustrates the 20th Quatrain, which reads:

The Palace that to Heav'n his pillars threw,

And Kings the forehead on his threshold drew -

I saw the solitary Ringdove there,

And 'Coo, coo, coo,' she cried; and 'Coo, coo, coo.'
