Vicente Palmaroli y González first studied painting at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid with Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz, and later in Rome and Paris, working alongside such artists as Mariano Fortuny and Ernest Meissonier.

This delicate scene of a woman looking out to see exemplifies the artist's attention to detail, particularly in the women's fashions and accessories. The roses dotting the standing woman's white dress echo the spray of flowers in the foliage behind her and in the potted plants at center.
