Description

of cusped oval openwork form, set with a central carved emerald with flowerhead and foliate scrolls, flanked by a pair of octagonal cut rubies, diamond and emerald flowerheads above and below, set within a red enamelled gold ground, the reverse enamelled with flowering plants reserved against a green ground, belt buckle band with green and white chevron enamelling

This belt buckle was reputedly in the collection of Maharani Jindan Kaur (1817-63), wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839). Please see footnote to the bazuband in this sale (lot 112). The sabz zamin green enamelling to the reverse is almost identical to that found on a gold belt-buckle in the Collection of Isabel Correa de Sa-Lacin, Switzerland, published in Markevitch 1987, p.78, no.33.
