A rare thangka depicting Maitreya with Avalokiteshvara & Vajrapani in Tushita heaven

Tibet, 17th/18th century

distemper on cloth, the Buddha Maitreya with a stupa in the hair and hands in dharmachakra mudra holding the stems of flowers bearing attributes of a dharmachakra wheel and a kundika vase, wearing a red and gold floral patterned robe, and seated in bhadrasana with feet resting on a lotus flower, surrounded by the temples and shrines of Tushita Heaven, with white Avalokiteshvara, blue Vajrapani and bodhisattvas seated either side, a lotus pond below, Tibetan monks flying in sky above and celestial gandharva musicians flanking Amitabha
