Albert Lebourg

The Cathedrale of Notre-Dame de Paris is one of Albert Lebourg's favorite motifs. The first catalogue raisonné of the artist, published in 1923 by Georges Bergeaud, lists seventy-eight paintings, forty-eight of which represent the chevet of this exceptional monument. It is a magnificent motif that the artist painted in all seasons with obvious pleasure. As early as 1893, the artist sent a painting on this motif to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

The fact that Albert Lebourg owned a house 8 rue de Pontoise, is not unrelated to this strong attraction. In the present work, the winter atmosphere, which the painter was particularly fond of, conveys an additional charm to the view of Notre-Dame. A beautiful sky typical of our Norman painter. A superb layout. Animation on the quay with characters and horses, and, a small detail that remarkably embellishes the white smoke wins the sky. This painting is a testimony to all the qualities of this painter, present with the Impressionists in 1879 and 1880.

C'est un splendide motif que l'artiste va peindre en toutes saisons avec un évident plaisir. Dès 1893, l'artiste adresse ce sujet à la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. 

Le fait qu'Albert Lebourg possédait aussi un domicile au 8 rue de Pontoise n'est pas étranger à cette forte attraction. Dans cette œuvre, l'atmosphère hivernale, qu'affectionne particulièrement le peintre, donne un charme supplémentaire à cette vue de Notre-Dame. Un beau ciel typique de notre peintre normand. Superbe mise en page. Animation sur le quai avec des personnages et chevaux, et, petit détail qui agrémente remarquablement un panache de fumée blanche gagne le ciel. Ce tableau est une démonstration de toutes les qualités de ce peintre, présent avec les Impressionnistes en 1879 et 1880.
