This painting relates to a larger canvas of the same date portraying a cat guarding the port of St. Tropez. The letter Z in the composition refers to the silent z of St. Tropez. A photograph of the present canvas in its interim state reveals that Man Ray initially signed and dated the painting Man Ray 58 at the lower right, and subsequently reworked various layers of pigments shortly there afterwards.

Il existe une toile plus grande de la même date représentant un chat gardant le port de St. Tropez. La lettre Z dans la composition fait référence au z silencieux de Saint-Tropez. Une photographie de cette toile dans son état intermédiaire révèle que Man Ray a d'abord signé et daté le tableau Man Ray 58 en bas à droite, puis a retravaillé diverses couches de pigments peu après.
