From 1969 onwards, Jean Dubuffet began to produce a series of autonomous drawings which were eventually associated with the architectural elements developed by the artist from 1971 to 1973, forming part of the famous series entitled ‘Coucou Bazar’.
Costume de Théâtre II was executed by Jean Dubuffet in the spring of 1971 as a preparatory sketch for the décor entitled Lord Majestic, produced in July of the same year. Seemingly the result of a fortuitous assembly, this work presents a tree-like composition of agglomerates, using the colour code characteristic of the artist's work, based on blues, reds and whites. A colourful and shimmering ensemble composed of coloured elements, crossed out with stripes, cut out and glued onto a Kraft paper support forming a character with a meditative and lyrical expression. This theatricality was to be the origin of the sculptures produced afterwards by Dubuffet, following the forms of the character and imprinting his imprint on a vast panel with an anthropomorphic appearance.
