Sotheby’s is pleased to announce Art as Jewelry as Art, a first of its kind auction focused exclusively on artists' jewelry.

This online auction will run from 24 September through 4 October 2022, with the works on view at Sotheby's York Avenue Galleries during the same period. The sale will present jewelry and adornment by some of the 20th century’s greatest artists. Bringing together a fascinating variety of works by major painters and sculptors—abstract expressionists, surrealists, and minimalists—as well as designers and architects who have explored the world in miniature.

A growing trend in the market is unique pieces that allow collectors to wear their art. Recent museum exhibitions at the Cincinnati Museum and the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, for example, as well as in increased dealer interest at recent art fairs, support this trend.

Some 150 thoughtfully chosen works of art, which can be worn as adornment or exhibited as part of a collection, will be presented. The auction will feature works by Louise Nevelson, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalì, Claude Lalanne, George Braque, Lucio Fontana, Afro, both Pomodoro brothers, Pol Bury, Kiki Smith, Louise Bourgeois, Picasso, Max Ernst, Ettore Sottsass, César, Arman, Jesus Raphael Soto and Man Ray among many others. Highlights include, the Meteora, 1970 Pendant by Umberto Mastroianni (Est. 20,000 – 30,000 USD); Lucio Fontana’s Ellipse with Holes 'Spatial Concept' Bracelet, 1967 (Est. 80,000 - 100,000 USD); Claude Lalanne for Zolotas’ Silver Necklace, and Claude Lalanne for Zolotas’ Vermeil Necklace, 1975 (each Est. 15,000 – 20,000 USD); and a rare Max Ernst work that is fresh to market and being sold by the Ernst family Tete à Cornes conceived in 1959, cast after 1988 (Est. 20,000 - 30,000 USD). The auction will also showcase a variety of visionary contemporary artists plunging into the realm of wearable sculpture.

There will be opportunities to schedule private viewings in advance of the auction by appointment. Please contact Tiffany.Dubin@sothebys.com or call 917-375-0671 for more information.
