Description

Il modo di elegere et coronare

Il modo di elegere & coronare lo Imperatore con la forma del suo iuramento. Col nome deli Re Patriarchi e Cardinali. [Venice, 1519? or Bologna, c. 1529-1530?]

4to (200 x 140mm.), 4 leaves, woodcut illustration on title-page of a king on a throne surrounded by courtiers and knights, final verso blank, later paper wrapper

RARE. Published to coincide with the coronation of Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor in Bologna in 1530, which was a ceremony designed to show the reconciliation and harmony between the Emperor and the Pope, this vernacular work was aimed at the general public rather than the dignitaries attending the coronation. It was, however, seemingly based on a medieval exemplar, from the anachronisms in the text, and includes a list of cardinals from the reign of Leo X (who died in 1521).

The woodcut also appears in an edition of Fioretti di Paladini dated 1524 and assigned to Venice (Edit16 79575).

LITERATURE:

cf. Edit16 48396 (different setting of first leaf and different woodcut) & 64394 (only 2 leaves); Sander 3493 (different setting)
