A Roman Marble Figure of Nemesis

Eastern Mediterranean, circa 2nd century A.D.


standing with the weight on her left leg, wearing sandals, long chiton girdled at the waist, and mantle falling down her back, her head turned slightly to the right and with centrally parted hair bound in a fillet, a seated griffin at her feet, a pair of scales carved in shallow relief in front of the plinth.

Total height 99.5 cm.; height from plinth 92 cm.

The present figure is based on the Aphrodite Colonna-Ermitage type, which was frequently used in Roman Asia Minor for figures of Nemesis.
