A Roman Bronze Appliqué Bust of Young Satyr

circa 1st Century A.D.


his head turned to the right, the pupils recessed for inlay, his hair brushed back, tied in a chignon, and surmounted by a wreath of ivy leaves, and wearing a goat skin tied on the left shoulder, filled with fruit, and held up in the right hand.

Height 8.7 cm.

European private collection, circa late 19th Century (based on mount and patina)

acquired by the present owner at the above sale
Related bronze busts are in Naples (B. Barr-Sharrar, The Hellenistic and Early Imperial Decorative Bust, 1987, p. 58f., no. C100, pl. 33), and in Kassel (S. Faust, Fulcra. Figürlicher und ornamentaler Schmuck an antiken Betten [30. Ergh. RM], 1989, p. 175, no. 137, pl. 68). It is likely that the present bust formed part of the bronze ornamentation of a kline.
