A Roman Bronze Protome Spout, circa 2nd Century A.D.


in the form of the head of a dog or wolf, the canine with tufted triangular ears, inclined furrowed brows, articulated lidded eyes, the nostrils indented, the whiskers appearing as curved grooves, the lolling tongue serving as the spout, the details of the fur incised, framed by thickly modeled locks along the rectangular plate from which the head projects, the plate perforated on its lower corners and with rounded perforated loops at the upper corners.
